Reading, Pa. – Penn State Berks Head Baseball Coach Paul Engelhardt will take a medical leave of absence for the upcoming 2026 season.
During Coach Engelhardt's absence, assistant coach Michael "Boomer" Barry will oversee the program.
Barry brings more than 25 years of experience as a respected sports professional, consistently exceeding program goals and contributing to the recruitment, retention, and development of student-athletes. Known for fostering a strong culture of commitment,
Barry emphasizes growth from acceptance through graduation, while encouraging ongoing alumni engagement and support. He is a motivated, process-driven, and team-oriented leader with expertise in organizational management, mentoring, and coaching.
Barry joined the Penn State Berks staff this fall after serving as an assistant coach at Kutztown University during the 2025 season. Prior to his time at Kutztown, Barry made coaching stops at Albright College, Ave Maria University, Southern Virginia University, Lynchburg College, Keuka College, Haverford College, The Catholic University of America, Centenary College, Virginia Wesleyan University, and Andrew College.
A graduate of Virginia Wesleyan College, Barry earned a bachelor's degree in English in 1997 before completing a master's degree in sport management at Old Dominion University in 2000
