Men’s tennis places all six on All-Conference teams

CLARKS SUMMIT, PA – The Penn State Berks men's tennis team had all its doubles teams and four singles members earn all-conference honors at the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Individual Tournament on Thursday and Friday.

Diego Olazagasti and Curtis Uhle highlighted Thursday nights action by winning the No. 1 doubles tournament and earning All-NEAC First Team honors. The No. 2 team of Jeremy Heist and Louay Qubain and No. 3 team of Sneh Patel and Jacob Metzger won the consolation match to receive All-NEAC Third Team recognition.

In singles action, Olazagasti (No.1), Heist (No. 3), and Qubain (No. 4) all earned second team honors, while Uhle (No. 2) landed on the third team.

Olazagasti and Uhle, ranked as the top seed in the No. 1 doubles tournament, avenged a loss from last weekend to Saint Elizabeth's top duo of Carmin Cronheim and Lesly Cruz-Munoz with an 8-6 victory in the first round. Olazagasti and Uhle followed that up with an 8-2 triumph over Michael Litz and Phillip Antonoff of Penn State Abington by a score of 8-2 in the title match.

Heist and Qubain were topped 8-2 in the opening round of the second doubles tournament. But the duo battled back with a thrilling 8-6 victory over the second seed team from Lancaster Bible College to place third.

At the third doubles tournament, Patel and Metzger fell 8-1 to the top seed out of LBC. Patel and Metzger took third place with a dramatic win over second seed pair from Penn College by taking the tiebreak 7-4 and thus winning the match 8-7.

Olazagasti entered the No. 1 singles tournament as the third seed won in comeback fashion to upset the second seeded player from LBC. Olazagasti dropped the opening set 3-6, but won a 7-5 tie break to take the second set 7-6. In the super tiebreak, Olazgasti had a 10-7 triumph to move onto the championship round. Litz defeated Olazgasti (6-1, 6-1) to win the No. 1 Singles Tournament for the third straight year.

Heist opened the third singles tournament with a 7-5, 6-4 win over his opponent from Lancaster Bible. Heist then fell in the championship match, 6-0, 6-4, to Will Demarco from Penn College.

Qubain found himself on the winning end of a 7-5, 7-5 battle with Nicholas Pascual of Penn College in the first round of the No. 4 singles tourney. Qubain was edged, 6-3, 6-1 by Ming Bowser of LBC in the title match.

Uhle dropped his first round match of the second singles tournament to top seed Ilker Erkut of Penn State Abington in heartbreaking fashion. Erkut won 7-6 in both sets, after picking up 7-5 victories in both tie breaking rounds. Uhle rebounded with a 8-4 win over Cronheim of St. Elizabeth in the consolation round.

The Nittany Lions finished the 2018-19 season with a 3-11 overall record and went 1-3 in the NEAC. With the bulk of the team set to return and addition of an incoming class, the Nittany Lions will look to make a return trip to the NEAC Postseason in the 2019-20 season.
