Nittany Lions sweep Abington in conference opener

READING, PA (April 5, 2014) - The Penn State Berks baseball team received complete-game pitching performances from Steve Koenig and Kyle Hartman en route to a 4-2 and 7-0 victory over Penn State Abington in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) opener on Saturday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

In the opener, Koenig scattered five hits on his way to picking up his first win and first complete game of the season. He held Abington scoreless over the first four innings and only allowed two hits over that time. In the fifth inning, Abington scored a run and had two runners on base, but Koenig escaped the jam surrendering only one run.

The Nittany Lions (6-10, 2-0 NEAC) got on the board with two runs in the second inning to jump out to a rare early lead. With the bases loaded, Luke Erb hit a grounder to short and Abington got the force out at second but the throw sailed wide of first base to score Connor Corson and Hartman.

After Abington cut the lead to 2-1, Berks responded with two runs in their half of the inning. Kyle Rissmiller singled followed by Tom Grablewski getting hit by a pitch. The two moved up on a passed ball and Dylan Gallagher plated both with a single past the drawn-in infield.

Rissmiller finished the game with one stolen bases, while Grablewski swiped two bags.

In the second game, Hartman pitched one of the best games of his career. The junior, left-hander allowed only four hits and struck out six batters. He let only two batters reach third base and a total of only five base runners got into scoring position. The only major jam Hartman got into was in the top of the seventh when he walked the bases loaded with only one out. He then got a strikeout swinging and a strikeout looking to wrap up the shutout performance.

At the plate, the Nittany Lions used small ball to jump out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Nick Zipay led off with a walk, advanced to second on an infield single by Rissmiller and both moved up a base after a balk. Grablewski then recorded a sacrifice fly to right field and Gallagher followed with a sacrifice fly to center field.

Zach Reis led off the second inning with a double down the right field line and came around to score when the throw on Troy Salerno's bunt single sailed wide of first base. Salerno then stole third base and scored on a double to right center by Zipay to put Berks ahead 4-0 after two innings.

The final touch came in the fourth inning when Corson ripped a bases clearing double to right center that gave the Nittany Lions a comfortable 7-0 cushion.
Rissmiller finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two bunt singles. Reis was 2-for-3 with two doubles, while four others tallied a hit.

The Nittany Lions will finish off their three-game series with Abington on Sunday, April 6 at 12 p.m.
