Nittany Lions finish off sweep of Penn State Abington

READING, PA (April 6, 2014) - The Penn State Berks baseball team finished off a three-game season sweep of Penn State Abington in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Sunday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field. Berks won by a score of 7-3, after defeating Abington 4-2 and 7-0 on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions (7-10, 3-0 NEAC), for the second day in a row, used small ball and strong pitching to grab the win.

Nick Zipay reached base on a throwing error to start off the bottom of the first and advanced all the way to third on a bunt single by Kyle Rissmiller. Tom Grablewski then flew out to center field score Zipay. Connor Corson led off the second inning with a single, then stole second base and moved up to third on a passed ball. Ryan Tantala flew out deep to right center, which easily scored Corson from third.

Berks broke it open with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning when Grablewski got hit by a pitch. Dylan Gallagher followed with a hit through the left side that got Grablewski to third base. Corson then had a fly out to right field to score Grablewski with the third sacrifice fly of the game. They tacked on three more runs in the inning with ZACH REIS, PHIL ANDERSON, and Keeanu Erb each recording an RBI.

The Nittany Lions pounded out 14 hits, with four players finished with two hits.

Luke Erb pitched a very effect 4.0 innings, but did not receive a decision. He allowed two hits, two earned runs, and struck out two batters. Erb's finest play of the day came in the third inning when the Nittany Lions were clinging to a 2-0 lead. Abington had runners on first and second with no outs and tried to move them up with a sacrifice bunt. The batter popped the ball up down the third base line and Erb raced off the mound, dove with his arms fully extended to make the catch.

Erik Lanzner earned the win after pitched 4.0 innings of strong relieve. The right-hander allowed four hits and just one unearned run. Mitch Renninger entered the game in the bottom of the ninth with one on and no outs. The freshman righty forced a pair of foul pop outs to Tantala and then got a fly to left field to seal the victory.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Lancaster Bible College for a NEAC contest on Wednesday, April 9 at 3 p.m.
