Men's tennis blanked by York College

Box Score YORK, PA (April 16, 2012) - The Penn State Berks men's tennis team lost, 9-0, to York College (PA) in its final tune up before the regular-season finale on Monday afternoon. (Boxscore)

The Nittany Lions (6-8) put up a fight in the doubles bouts, but were not able to get into the win column. The top duo of Matt Holdorf and George Chacko suffered an 8-5 setback, while Creston Smoker and Javier Quinones-Melendez fell 8-3 in the second flight.

Holdorf played strong in the No. 1 singles match, but dropped a third set tiebreaker to Spartans (10-7) top player Philip Myers. Myers took the first set by a score of 6-1, but Holdorf fought back with a 6-3 victory to force the tiebreaker. In the decisive set, Myers clinched the victory by a 10-5 margin.

Chacko also found himself in a tight contest at the second singles spot. James Villaro pulled out a 6-4 win in the opening set and Chacko evened the match with a 7-6 win after dominating the tiebreak 6-0. Villari grabbed the win after winning 10-6 in the final set.

The Nittany Lions will finish off the regular-season when they host Keuka College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Saturday, April 21 at 1 p.m. The men's team will be joining efforts with women's tennis, baseball, and softball in raising money and awareness for breast cancer. All of the teams will be donning pink t-shirts to show their support.
