Men's tennis falls in St. Mary's in semifinal round

Box Score HERSHEY, PA - The Penn State Berks men's tennis team saw its 2022-23 season draw to a close after falling to St. Mary's College in the semifinal round of the United East Championship on Friday night at the Hershey Racquet Club. The Seahawks, who won the regular season title and are the No. 1 seed in the tournament, were seventh in the most recent regional ranking.

The No. 1 doubles team of Jazae Maina-Itegi and Weston Weaver were topped, 8-2, by the Seahawks duo of Boris Palmade and Stephen Alam. Donovan Sullivan and Daniel Popovici fell 8-1 in the second doubles bout to Nick Rohr and Daoud Alkhalidi, while Cole Epting and Jack Filip suffered a loss by a similar score to Keawe Johnson and Liam Pratt in the third flight.

Maina-Itegi (No. 1) and Sullivan (No. 2) dropped their singles matches, which gave St. Mary's the fifth point they needed to clinch the victory. Weaver was battling in the No. 3 singles match, falling 7-5 in the opening set before the match was ended.

Berks finished the season with an overall record of 8-5 and were 3-3 in the United East to finish fourth in the standings. The team will bid farewell to Popovici, the lone senior on the team. With a roster full of underclassmen, the Nittany Lions will look to build off its return trip to the conference postseason.
