Uhle named Rookie of the Year; Men's tennis places nine on All-NEAC teams

CLARKS SUMMIT, PA - The Penn State Berks men's tennis squad followed up its team championship victory with a solid showing during the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Individual Tournament on Sunday afternoon at the Birchwood Tennis Club. The Nittany Lions had all of their members earn All-NEAC First or Second Team honors, as well as the NEAC Rookie of the Year (Curtis Uhle) and NEAC Co-Coach of the Year (Scott Yarnell). (Results)

Uhle is the third member of the men's tennis program to earn Rookie of the Year honors, joining Drew Weinhold (2012-13) and Diego Olazagasti (2016-17). The NEAC Coach of the Year honors is the second straight year that Yarnell has received the award. This is the first time that Yarnell has earned the recognition in men's and women's tennis during the same season.

In doubles action, Uhle and Federico Ochoa picked up an 8-4 win in the semifinals and followed it up with an 8-5 victory in the No. 2 doubles title match. With the victory, Uhle and Ochoa earned All-NEAC First Team honors. The No. 1 tandem of Will Byler and Olazagasti, as well as the No. 3 team of Grant Batzer and Shane Leaf both won in the semifinals, but fell in the championship to earn All-NEAC Second Team honors.

In the singles tournaments, Olazagasti (No. 2) and Ochoa (No. 4) won their tournaments to earn a spot on the All-NEAC First Team. Byler (No. 1), Uhle (No. 3), Batzer (No. 5), and Leaf (No. 6) won in the semi's, but lost in the title match to receive All-NEAC Second Team recognition.

The Nittany Lions will compete in the NEAC/NAC Crossover Championship against the NAC East Division Champion Colby-Sawyer on Sunday, May 6 at Tri-City Tennis Club in Latham, N.Y. The winner of the NEAC/NAC Crossover Championship will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Tournament.
