Nittany Lions split first day of NEAC Tournament

WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 9, 2014) - The Penn State Berks baseball team opened up the 2014 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Championship with a 7-0 win over No. 2 seed Keuka College, but dropped its next game, 9-4, to fourth seeded SUNY Institute of Technology on Friday afternoon to Hoy Field.

In the opener, the Nittany Lions (16-19) had at least one hit by every batter in the starting lineup and five had two or more hits. Keeanu Erb was a career-high 4-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base. Nick Zipay, Ryan Tantala, Connor Corson, and Troy Salerno each recorded two hits. Tantala also added three runs batted in. Tom Grablewski had one hit, scored a run, and stole two bases.

On the mound, Kyle Hartman went all 9.0 innings to pick up his fifth win and second shut out of the season. He scattered six hits, while striking out three batters. The Storm (22-13) did not have any baserunners reach third base and left a total of eight runners on base for the game.

The Nittany Lions got revenge on the Keuka, who swept the regular-season series on the final week of the season to drop Berks down to third in the conference standings.

In the second game it was SUNYIT who got the payback from the regular season. The Nittany Lions swept the season series, capped off with a walk-off game winner by Grablewski in the final game of the series. But on Friday the Wildcats won to advance to the tournament championship on Sunday, where they will need to be beaten two times.

SUNYIT got on the scoreboard early and often to take control of the game. They scored three in the top of the first and added four in the third inning.

Tantala had two runs batted in, while Kyle Rissmiller went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Zach Reis went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.

The Nittany Lions will play at 1 p.m. against the winner of the morning elimination game between host Gallaudet University and Keuka.
