Baseball downs Gallaudet, heading to NEAC Championship

WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 10, 2014) - The Penn State Berks baseball team kept its season alive with a 3-2, 11 inning victory over tournament host Gallaudet University in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Championship on Saturday afternoon. The win will send the Nittany Lions to the title round game against SUNY Institute of Technology, where Berks will need to win two games.

The Nittany Lions (17-19) received a monster effort on the mound out of Zach Reis. The freshman right-hander tossed a single-game school record 10.0 innings. In that time, he scattered nine hits and allowed two runs against a Bison (26-17) team that entered the week tied for 38th in the country with 289 runs scored.

Reis worked a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the ninth, but Berks could not capitalize in the tenth. Reis entered the extra frame and got two quick outs to the second and third batters in the order. He walked the next batter, but escaped the jam with a fly out to right to end the inning.

In the top of the 11th, Nick Zipay walked and stole second base to put a runner in scoring position with two outs. Two batters later, Tom Grablewski's grounder was mishandled and allowed Zipay to score from second to give Berks its second lead of the game.

Mitch Renninger came on in relief and worked around a single and a walked batter to send the Nittany Lions to its fifth title game in six years.

Trailing 1-0 in the fourth, Ryan Tantala singled to right field and scored from first on a double to center by Connor Corson. Kyle Rissmiller led off the fifth with a single and moved up to second on a wild pitch. Zipay moved him to third with a bunt single and Keeanu Erb drove him home with a sacrifice fly to left field, giving Berks a 2-1 advantage.

The Nittany Lions will look to avenge their 9-4 loss to SUNYIT on Friday afternoon. The game time for the first game is set for 10 a.m. and should the Nittany Lions win, the if necessary game will start shortly after the conclusion of game one.
