Nittany Lions outlast SUNYIT, force decisive game

WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 11, 2014) - The Penn State Berks baseball team pulled out another extra inning victory to keep its season alive with a wild 8-5 victory over SUNY Institute of Technology to force a winner-take-all game that will be played on Sunday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions (18-19) tacked on three runs in the top of the 12th inning by taking advantage of two defensive miscues. Ryan Tantala got to second base after the right fielder dropped his fly ball to start the inning. Connor Corson laid down a sacrifice bunt with two-strikes on him to move Tantala to third. Luke Erb then followed with an RBI single up the middle. Nick Zipay later drove in two runs with a double down the left field line to pad the lead to 8-5.

Kyle Hartman allowed just a walk in the bottom of the 12th to secure the win. Hartman allowed two unearned runs in six innings of relief. He earned his second win in three days, after pitching a complete-game, shutout over Keuka College in the opening round.

Hartman worked out of a one-out bases loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh inning. The junior left-hander forced a shallow fly to left field and got the ender with a strikeout, to keep the game at 3-all.

Zipay picked the right time for the best game of his career as he went 4-for-4 with three RBI, two runs scored, and a stolen base. Keeanu Erb went 2-for-6 and gave Berks a 3-2 lead with a two-run single in the top of the seventh.

Steve Koenig allowed three runs (one earned) in the first six innings of the contest. He set the Wildcats down in order in the first and third inning and only allowed a lead off double in the third inning.

The winner of the next game will be crowned the NEAC Champion and will earn an automatic qualifying berth into the NCAA Regional Tournament.
