Nittany Lions pick up walk-off win over SUNYIT on Senior Day

READING, PA (April 27, 2014) -  Tom Grablewski drove in Troy Salerno with a single to right center to give the Penn State Berks baseball team a 4-3 walk-off win over SUNY Institute of Technology in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Sunday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lions overall record shifted to 15-15 and they are currently tied for first place with Gallaudet University in the NEAC standings with an 11-4 record. In addition to a thrilling conference win, the Nittany Lions honored five members of the program Senior Day honors.

Ryan Tantala, a four-year member of the team, tossed a complete-game in what could be the last home start of his career. Kyle Rissmiller, who was also honored before the game, tied the game at 3-all with a two-out RBI single down the right field line. Senior Phil Anderson recorded a single and made four putouts in left field, including a diving catch. Joel Sharp and John Rivera were also honored accomplishments and contributions to the program.

This was the fourth time Tantala had tossed a 9.0 inning complete-game. He scattered seven hits, while surrendering three runs (one earned) to lead Berks to the series sweep over the Wildcats (13-15, 8-7 NEAC). The senior right-hander only had two strikeouts, but the second strikeout was the hugest out of the afternoon. In the top of the ninth with a runner on second base, Tantala ended the threat with a strikeout and giving Berks the momentum heading into the bottom of the inning.

SUNYIT recorded two quick outs in the bottom of the ninth and the game appeared to be heading for extras. But Salerno drew a four-pitch walk and stole second base to apply pressure to the Wildcats. On the following pitch, Grablewski drove an outside pitch to right center field that scored Salerno as the right fielder's throw came in late to home. Salerno and the entire Nittany Lion bench ran out to first base to mob Grablewski for his heroics. Three out of the four Nittany Lions runs came with two outs.

In the top of the eighth, the Wildcats took advantage of a few Berks miscues to go ahead 3-2. Connor Corson singled up the middle and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Rissmiller then slapped a tailing line drive down the right field line the dropped in just inside the foul line and just in front of the right fielder to even the contest.

Grablewski and Corson each had RBI singles in the bottom of the third to erase the Wildcats early 1-0 lead.

Grablewski finished the day 3-for-5 with two runs batted in, while Kyle Hartman and Corson each registered two hits.

The Nittany Lions will host DeSales University in a non-conference contest on Tuesday, April 29 at 4 p.m.
