Nittany Lions pick up crucial sweep over SUNYIT

READING, PA (April 26, 2014) - The Penn State Berks baseball team grabbed a pair of wins over SUNYIT, 6-1 and 7-3, in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lions (14-15, 10-4 NEAC) share the same record with Gallaudet University in the conference standings, but the Bison hold the tie-break after taking two of three games in the season series. Berks can clinch a spot in the postseason with a win or a Penn State Abington loss over the final four conference games.

The Wildcats were able to put up a run in the opening frame of game one, but staff ace Kyle Hartman was able to keep them scoreless over the next six innings. Hartman tossed a complete-game, five hitter with one unearned run. The junior left-hander struck out a career-high 11 batters, which is tied for the second most in a game in program-history. Hartman currently ranks fourth in the conference in ERA (2.55) and is third in strikeouts (43).

Hartman helped his cause at the plate by going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Nick Zipay, Tom Grablewski, and Keeanu Erb each tallied two hits and scored a run. Connor Corson finished the game with a team-high two runs batted in.

In the second game, the Nittany Lions found themselves in an early 3-0 hole heading into the bottom of the third. They cut the deficit to 3-2 with an RBI single by Hartman and a sacrifice fly by Ryan Tantala. Mitch Renninger entered in relief with a 1-2-3 shutdown inning and the Berks went back to work in their half of the inning. With the bases loaded, Grablewski had a bases clearing double to right center to give the Nittany Lions a 5-3 advantage. Tantala added a run with another sacrifice fly in the fifth and triple by Hartman in the sixth tallied the seventh run.

Luke Erb pitched three strong innings to open the game, allowing only three hits and surrendering three runs (one earned) with four strikeouts. Renninger earned the win with a perfect inning of relief. Rockie Long, Zach Reis, and Erik Lanzner each tossed a scoreless inning of relief to help the Nittany Lions secure the win.

The softball team paired up with the baseball team to raise $322 as they hosted Pink Game fundraisers to help the Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks County. A special thanks goes out to Giana Sharp , who contributed hand-made bracelets that were sold to help benefit the Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks County.

The Nittany Lions will finish off their three-game series with SUNYIT on Saturday, April 27 at 12 p.m. In addition, the Nittany Lions will recognize five of their student-athletes with Senior Day festivities.
