Baseball splits with Lancaster Bible

LANCASTER, PA (April 23, 2014) - The Penn State Berks baseball team poured it on late in a 14-3 win in the opener over Lancaster Bible College. The Chargers used a late rally to pick up a 6-3 win in the second game of the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions (12-15, 8-4 NEAC) led 6-2 heading into the top of the seventh, but an eight run inning gave them a sizable cushion. Kyle Hartman finished 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored. More importantly, Hartman's first inning single was the 100th hit of his career.

Tom Grablewski went 3-for-4 with two RBI and matched a career-high with four runs scored. Luke Erb and Connor Corson each recorded two hits and two RBI, with Erb also scoring three times.

Zach Reis made a phenomenal pitching debut with a complete-game, three strike out performance. The freshman right-hander allowed three runs, two of which were earned.

In the second game, Corson joined Hartman as a member of the 100 hit club as he drilled a double into left center field. The duo became the fourth and fifth Nittany Lions to reach the career milestone.

Hartman had an RBI single in the first inning to score Nick Zipay and Ryan Tantala hit a two-run home run to give Berks a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning.

The Chargers came to life in the bottom of the sixth with five runs and Justin Taylor came in to close out the final inning and earn the save.

Alex Doyle was solid in his 3 2/3 innings of work. He gave up just two hits and allowed only one run, while striking out one.

The Nittany Lions will host SUNYIT in a NEAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 26 at 1 p.m. They will team up with the softball squad to host a Pink Games fundraiser to raise money and awareness for breast cancer research.
