Nittany Lions salvage split with Gallaudet

READING, PA (April 19, 2014) - The Penn State Berks baseball team dropped a 3-2 heart breaker in the opener against Gallaudet University, but followed with an 8-6 comeback win to split the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lions (11-13, 7-3 NEAC) trailed 6-4 in the bottom of the fourth inning, but took advantage of an error, two wild pitches, two hit batters, and three walks to go ahead 8-6. All four of the runs came with two outs and bases loaded as Kyle Hartman was hit by a pitch, Connor Corson walked, Joel Sharp was hit by a pitch, and Zach Reis singled up the middle.

After gaining the lead, Ryan Tantala settled in and finished off the relief effort to get the win. He pitched 3.1 innings, allowing only two hit and no runs, while striking out four batters. In the bottom of the seventh, the Bison (21-11, 9-3 NEAC) had runners at the corners and two outs with with 2012 NEAC Player of the Year William Bissell coming to the plate. Tantala worked ahead to a 1-2 count and forced several foul tips before getting Bissell to fly out to center field.

Corson recorded two RBI, while Troy Salerno and Tom Grablewski each scored two runs.

In the opener, Grablewski and Hartman each singled to start the fourth inning. Grablewski stole third base and scored on a sacrifice fly by Corson to right field. Reis later singled down the right field line to score Hartman and give Berks a 2-1 lead. The Bison, however, would plate a single run in both the fifth and sixth to pull out the win.

Luke Erb turned in a strong effort, but unfortunately was not able to get the win. The sophomore left-hander tossed a complete-game, seven hitter. He allowed three runs - two earned - while striking out four batters.

The Nittany Lions will host Wilkes University in a non-conference contest on Monday, April 22 at 4 p.m.
