Baseball drops heartbreaker to Wilkes

READING, PA (April 21, 2014) - The Penn State Berks baseball team suffered an 8-7 setback to Wilkes University in a non-conference contest on Monday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lions (11-14) led 7-3 after the fourth inning, but Wilkes combined for five runs over the seventh and eighth inning to grab the win.

Joel Sharp had a career-day as he finished 4-for-5 with three RBI and a double. The senior second baseman doubled to left center in the fourth inning that gave Berks its first lead of the game at 4-3.

Nick Zipay entered the game as a pinch runner in the bottom of the third an made an immediate impact. He stole second and third base on successive pitches, but was unable to get driven in by his teammates. The sophomore catcher then singled up the middle to drive in two runs in the fourth inning to give the Nittany Lions a four-run lead. He tacked on another hit to finish the day 2-for-3.

Alex Doyle went 3-for-4, while Troy Salerno was 2-for-6 with a run scored. Keith Salmon had a hit and scored two runs.

Rockie Long turned in his finest pitching performance of the season, going 5.0 innings and limiting the Colonels offense. He allowed seven hits and surrendered three runs, while striking out one batter.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Lancaster Bible College for a NEAC doubleheader on Wednesday, April 23 at 1 p.m.
