Susquehanna picks up sweep over Nittany Lions

SELINSGROVE, PA (March 29, 2014) - The Penn State Berks baseball team suffered 12-2 and 2-1 setbacks in a non-conference doubleheader against Susquehanna University on Saturday afternoon at Howard Bollinger Field.

The Nittany Lions scored a run in the first inning of the opening game and trailed only 3-1 heading into the bottom of fifth. But the Crusaders pulled away with nine runs in the next two innings.

Kyle Rissmiller, who finished 2-for-3, singled in the first inning and stole second base. Tom Grablewski then drove him in with an RBI single to center field. In the top of the sixth, Nick Zipay drew a walk and Rissmiller reached on a bunt single. Grablewski moved the runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Dylan Gallagher then provided a sacrifice fly to center to score Zipay.

Luke Erb pitched 4.2 innings while making his first collegiate start on the mound. He struck out the side in the first inning and finished the game with five punch outs.

The second game was pitcher's duel between Kyle Hartman and Casey Hood. The only trouble Hartman ran into was two runs in the opening frame. From that point on, the left-hander only allowed only five more base runners and did not allow any to reach third base. In 6.0 innings of work, Hartman allowed two runs - one earned - with three strikeouts and just one walk.

Hood tossed the first 6.0 innings, allowing three hits, no runs, striking out seven and walking only one batter. He was lifted for a reliever to start the top of the seventh.

Berks had the tying run on third base and the go-ahead at first base with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Matt Smith forced a pop out to work out of the jam and earn his eighth save of the season. Smith walked the bases loaded with one out before Erb scored Gallagher by reaching on a fielder's choice.

The Nittany Lions will host Penn State Abington in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader on Saturday, April 5 at 1 p.m.
