Men's tennis drops spring opener to Immaculata

Box Score IMMACULATA, PA (March 14, 2013) - The Penn State Berks men's tennis team suffered a 7-2 setback to Immaculata University in the first match of the spring portion of the schedule on Thursday afternoon. (Boxscore)

The Nittany Lions (1-3) fell behind 2-1 in the doubles matches and were unable to make up the difference in singles action.

Drew Weinhold and George Chacko held off the Mighty Macs (1-0) from sweeping the doubles bouts by picking up an 8-5 victory in the No. 1 spot. Steven Roughton and Jerrad Seifrit put up a battle at second doubles, but dropped the match by an 8-4 count.

Roughton earned the only Nittany Lions win in singles play with a 7-5, 6-3 decision over Eric Schmidt in the third flight. Creston Smoker dropped his first set, 6-0, before evening the match with a 6-3 second set win. He was able to finish off the comeback in No. 4 singles as Nicholas Coia won the decisive third set, 6-1.

The Nittany Lions will return to action on Saturday, March 16 with a 10 a.m. contest at Ursinus College.
