Men's tennis narrowly edge out Cabrini, 5-4

READING, PA (April 10, 2012) - Creston Smoker and George Chacko won all of their matches to lead the Penn State Berks men's tennis team to a thrilling 5-4 victory over Cabrini College on Tuesday afternoon at Gring's Mill. (Boxscore)

The Nittany Lions (5-6) grabbed wins at two of the three doubles matches and picked up three convincing victories in the singles play.

Chacko and Dashiell Kopp, playing together for the first time, teamed up for an 8-2 victory in the first doubles spot. Javier Quinones-Melendez and Smoker improved to 3-2 at third doubles with an 8-3 win over Nate Martin and John Giovanelli.

Matt Holdorf (No. 1) and Chacko (No. 2) both won by set scores of 6-1, 6-0 to lead the Nittany Lions at the top of the lineup. The decisive victory came from Smoker out of sixth singles, where he was a 6-1, 6-1 winner.

Josh Konz played solid in fifth singles, but dropped his match by set scores of 6-4, 6-4. Quinones-Melendez fell in a super tiebreaker by a score of 10-7. He dropped the first set 6-4, but forced the extra play after winning 6-1 in the second set.

The Nittany Lions will return to conference action when they travel to Lancaster Bible College on Thursday, April 12. The match will begin at 3:30 p.m.
