Nittany Lions pull out tight win over Neumann University

Box Score ASTON, PA (March 28, 2012) - Three players were perfect in singles and doubles play to help lead the Penn State Berks men's tennis team to a 5-4 victory over Neumann University on Wednesday afternoon. (Boxscore)

The Nittany Lions (3-5) nabbed wins at two of the three doubles spots. The top duo of Steven Roughton and George Chacko picked up an 8-6 nailbiter. Javier Quinones-Melendez and Bradley Kale followed with an 8-3 victory at second doubles, while Creston Smoker and Alec Eliasson dropped a hard fought 8-5 bout in the third flight.

Roughton finished off his perfect day with a 6-0, 6-4 win in No. 1 singles over Zane Buckley. Quinones-Melendez (No. 3) won by set scores of 6-2, 6-1 and Kale picked up a convincing 6-0, 6-0 victory in the No. 4 singles spot.

Smoker played strong at No. 5 singles, but fell in his pro-set by a score of 8-7 (7-1 in tiebreaker). Amir Alikhani also gave a solid performance, but was on the wrong end of a 6-4, 7-5 decision in sixth singles.

The Nittany Lions will open up North Eastern Athletic Conference when they host Penn State Abington on Sunday, April 1 at 1 p.m.
