Men's tennis down Immaculata, 8-1

Box Score READING, PA (March 20, 2012) - The Penn State Berks men's tennis team played its strongest match of the season on Tuesday afternoon, defeating Immaculata University by a score of 8-1 at Gring's Mill. (Boxscore)

It was the first win of the spring season for the Nittany Lions, who improved to 2-4 overall. Matt Holdorf, Bradley Kale and Javier Quinones-Melendez each won both of their singles and doubles matches.

Holdorf and Kale teamed up to win the second doubles by a score of 8-1. Holdorf then earned a 6-1, 6-1 win over Eric Schmidt at No. 2 singles. Kale also won by scores of 6-1 in both sets out of the fifth spot.

Quinones-Melendez did not lose a set in any of singles or doubles play. He teamed with Creston Smoker for an 8-0 shutout at third doubles and won his No. 4 singles contest 6-0, 6-0.

Berks' No. 1 doubles duo of Steven Roughton and George Chacko were edged out 9-7 by the Mighty Macs (0-4) team of Demetrios Vlahos and T.J. Klinger. Roughton and Chacko got their revenge with impressive wins in their singles bouts.

In No. 1 singles, Roughton dropped his first set 6-4 to Vlahos, but bounced back with a 6-0 victory in the second set. Roughton carried that momentum into the super tiebreaker, winning by a 10-1 margin.

Chacko won 6-2, 6-1 over Klinger in the third singles flight to earn his first collegiate victory.

The other Berks victory came from Josh Konz (6-0, 6-3) in sixth singles.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Messiah College on Thursday afternoon for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
