Men’s tennis edged out by Alvernia, 5-4

READING, PA (April 7, 2011) – The Penn State Berks men's tennis team lost a 5-4 heartbreaker to cross-town rival Alvernia University in a non-conference match on Thursday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions (3-4) found themselves in a 2-1 hole after the doubles sets were completed. The lone win came from the pair of Bradley Kale and Javier Quinones-Melendez by a score of 8-3 in third doubles.

Quinones-Melendez kept Berks in the hunt for the victory after cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 5 singles spot. He has now combined for six straight wins between singles and doubles competition.

Steven Roughton was a 6-2, 6-0 winner in the No. 3 singles and Matt Holdorf prevailed 6-1, 6-3 at fourth singles to round out the Berks winners.

Kale had a strong showing as both sets went to tiebreaker, but he fell 7-6 in both sets at the sixth singles spot.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Neumann College for a non-conference match on Tuesday, April 12 beginning at 4 p.m.
