READING, PA (March 29, 2011) - The Penn State Berks men's tennis team downed Lancaster Bible, 9-0, in a non-conference match on Tuesday afternoon to earn its second straight win by shutout.
The match was the second home contest for the Nittany Lions, but first playing on their usual court at Gring's Mill. Berks opened the season with a match against Muhlenberg on February 19 at Hillcrest Racquet Club.
Andrew Miller made quick work of his match in the No. 1 singles slot, defeating Taylor Lantz 6-0, 6-2. TIM KO found himself in a battle at the second singles. Ko won 7-1 in a tiebreaker to earn a 7-6 first set victory. He followed that up with a 6-1 win in the second set clincher. Miller and Ko teamed up for an 8-1 triumph in the first doubles pair.
Matt Holdorf (No. 3 singles) won by set scores of 6-1, 6-1 and Javier Quinones-Melendez was a 6-1, 6-0 winner in the fourth singles flight.
Bradley Kale prevailed in a tight match at fifth singles. The freshman took down Jeremy Davis 7-6 after earning a 7-1 victory in the first set tiebreaker. He then outlasted Davis with a 6-4 win in the second set. Freshman Creston Smoker rounded out the winners in the singles play with a 6-1, 6-4 victory in the No. 6 spot.
Cody Schreiner and JOSH KONZ were a part of the closest match of the day. The duo were in a back-and-forth match that ended with a come from behind 8-6 win at second doubles.
Smoker and Matt Marchalonis won by forfeit in the No. 3 doubles flight.
The Nittany Lions will travel to Wilkes University for a 3:30 p.m. match on Thursday, March 31.
