READING, PA (February 5, 2011) - The Penn State Berks men's basketball team avenged an early season setback to Cazenovia College with a 91-83 victory on Saturday afternoon at Beaver Community Center.
The Nittany Lions, who snapped a three-game losing streak with the victory, improved to 7-12 overall and 7-6 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference.
Dontez Reid drained four 3-pointers and led all scorers with 22 points. Tom Smith was 7-for-10 shooting from the floor and 7-of-9 at the line to finish with 21 points. Shawn Green (18 points) and Tore Turner (12 points) rounded out the Berks in double-figures.
The Lions finished the first half a scorching 64.7 percent and were 7-for-11 on 3's. The Wildcats (3-16, 3-11 NEAC) were nearly as impressive with a 60.6 shooting percentage and 7-for-13 showing from long distance. Berks carried a 53-51 lead into the locker room at half.
The second stanza saw the teams with nearly identical numbers as well. The Lions shot 13-for-34 and made two 3-pointers, while the Wildcats went 14-for-37 and also hit two 3's.
The Lions would never trail again during the contest after Turner knocked down a 3-pointer to go ahead 11-10 at the 18:07 mark. The Wildcats tied the contest twice in the second half, but were never able to push ahead of the Lions.
Bryant Winans finished with 21 points and was one of five Wildcats in double digits. Andrew Jensen (19 points, 10 boards) and Robert Rohrig (10 points, 12 boards) each recorded double-doubles. Ryan Howdownes dished out a game-high 10 assists.
Berks will host Morrisville State at 3 p.m. tomorrow in a North Eastern Athletic Conference at Beaver Community Center.
