Wells downs Berks men in NEAC battle



READING, PA (January 15, 2011) - The Penn State Berks men's basketball team dropped a 94-73 decision to hot shooting Wells College at Beaver Community Center in Saturday afternoon's North Eastern Athletic Conference contest.

The win moves the Express to 4-3 in the NEAC and 4-9 overall, while the Nittany Lions fall to 4-4 in the conference and 4-9 overall.

After Berks jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the early going, the Express went on a 13-0 run to lead 17-10. The Lions took their final lead a 21-10 with 10:23 remaining in the half, but a second 13-0 run gave Wells the lead for good. The Express took a 41-26 into the halftime intermission.

Freshmen big men Thomas Smith and Nathaniel Weldon finished with tied for the team-lead with 13 points. Weldon, whose point total was a season-best, scored 11 in the second half on 4-for-4 shooting from the floor. He also grabbed seven of his team-leading nine rebounds in the second stanza.

Shawn Green added 12 points and CONNOR HOUGH chipped in 10 to round out the Lions in double figures.

The Express were fueled by the duo of Mabior Mayen and Terry Harrison, who each had double-doubles. Mayen had a game-high 33 points and 12 boards, while Harrison had scored 18 with 10 rebounds.

Wells dominated on the glass with a 46-35 rebounding margin, while Berks forced 21 turnovers and only committed 17. Another big factor favoring the Express was its 54.7% shooting from the field and 47.1% from beyond the arc. The Lions shot 37.8% and struggled from 3-point land on 3-for-15 shooting.

Berks will return to action tomorrow when it hosts Keuka College at 3 p.m. in a NEAC contest at Beaver Community Center.
