Perone, Reid lead Lions in second half surge

READING, PA (January 16, 2011) - The Penn State Berks men's basketball team used a strong second half to overcome an 11 point halftime deficit in a 78-74 overtime win over Keuka College on Sunday afternoon at Beaver Community Center.

The win improved Berks to 5-4 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) standings and 5-9 overall, while the Storm fell to 0-8 in the conference and 1-11 overall.

Michael Perone and Dontez Reid were catalysts in the second half fireworks. Perone scored 17 of his career-high 20 points in the first four minutes, 43 seconds of the second half. In that stretch, he recorded 17 of the Lions 18 points to crawl back to within three points at 45-42.

Reid recorded an assist on all of Perone's second half baskets and finished the game with a career-high 10 assists. Reid was also a sharpshooter from beyond the arc on 4 of 7 shooting. He finished with 19 points, recording the first double-double of his collegiate career.

The teams exchanged baskets in the final three minutes of regulation. With 5.4 seconds remaining, the Storm set up the offense for a potential game winner, but Putter Brown's 3 from the corner sailed over the net to take the game to overtime.

In the extended time, Nate Weldon's lay-in broke a 74-all tie with 1:24 remaining and Reid buried a pair of free throws to secure the win. Weldon finished the game with four points and a team-high11 rebounds.

Tom Smith gave a 19 point, 10 rebound performances for Berks, with all of his boards coming on the offense end.

The Storm were led by center Diamond Booker's 24 points and nine rebounds. Teddy Tuggles added 21 points and Brian Cunliffe chipped in with 11.

It was a tale of two halves for the Nittany Lions. In the first half the Lions shot 29% (9-for-31) and trailed by 11. In the second half and overtime, Berks shot 50% on 20-for-40 shooting. The only constant was the hot shooting from 3 point land, where the Lions shot 60% (12-for-20).

The Lions will travel to Penn State Abington on Wednesday, January 19 for a 7:30 p.m. NEAC contest.
