Baseball edged by Abington in series opener

JENKINTOWN, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team dropped a 10-8 decision to Penn State Abington in the opening game of a three-game series on Friday afternoon.

Berks scored a pair of runs in the top of the first, but Abington tied it up in the home half and later added solo runs in the third and fourth. Berks knotted the game at 4-all in the top of the seventh, but Abington pushed across four runs in the bottom half. Berks rallied for four runs in the eighth inning, however Abington again responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Tyler McGarvey led off the top of the ninth with a double, but was left stranded.

Chad Evans led the offense, going 3-for-5 with a double and three runs batted in. Logan Ewert finished 2-for-5 with a run scored, while McGarvey went 2-for-4 with a double and a walk. Nate Trovinger was 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, Joe Gramignano (one RBI) and Colin Templin each had a hit and scored twice.

Josh Miiller scattered five hits and allowed four runs (three earned), while striking out five in 6.0 innings of work. Ryan Spatz and Dale Murphy each recorded a strikeout in one inning of relief.

The two teams will face off in a doubleheader tomorrow (Saturday, April 2) beginning at 1 p.m.
