Baseball downs Seahawks to take three-game series

ST. MARY'S, MD - The Penn State Berks baseball team stayed hot with a 13-6 victory on the road over St. Mary's College in Monday afternoon's United East contest.

With the win, the Nittany Lions took two of three games in the first series against their newest conference opponent. Berks has won four of its last five games to improve to 6-5 on the season and sit at 2-1 in league play.

Berks plated three runs in the top of the first inning. Joe Gramignano led off the game with a single and was driven in by Nate Trovinger's first RBI of the afternoon. Later in the inning, Kolbie Reese doubled down the left field line to score Colin Templin and Trovinger. The Seahawks (5-4, 1-2 United East) got one run back in the first and two more in the third to even the game at 2-all.

The Nittany Lions put up seven runs in the fourth to build a 10-3 advantage. In that inning, they had four hits, while taking advantage of three walks, one hit batter, and an error. Griffin Kay singled to center to score Reeser and David Rudisill for the first two runs of the inning. Gramignano drew a bases loaded walk to bring in Logan Ewert from third. With two outs, Trovinger cleared the bases with a single to left field to bring in Kay, Nick Bergeman, and Gramignano. McGarvey capped off the scoring with a single to right center to bring in Trovinger.

Berks tacked on two more runs in the fifth with a bases loaded walk to Templin and Trovinger was hit by a pitch. Trovinger drove in his career-best fifth RBI of the game with a single to left in the seventh to give the Nittany Lions a 13-4 lead.

Josh Miiller picked up his first win of the season after 6.0 solid innings in the mound. The sophomore right-hander allowed six hits and four runs, while striking out four batters. Ryan Spatz allowed two runs and struck out one batter in 3.0 innings of relief to earn the save. The freshman left-hander got a double play to end the eighth and ninth innings.

Trovinger finished 2-for-5 with five RBI, two runs scored, and a stolen base. Reeser was 4-for-5 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored, while Gramignano collected two hits, scored three times, and drove in a run. Kay and Rudisill each had one hit and scored a pair of runs.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Muhlenberg College for a non-conference contest on Wednesday, March 23 at 3:30 p.m.
