Baseball splits United East opener with St. Mary's

ST. MARY'S CITY, MD - The Penn State Berks baseball team split its United East opener with St. Mary's College, falling 6-5 in the opener and winning 10-8 in game two on Sunday afternoon.

There was excitement at the tail end of both games. The Nittany Lions (5-5, 1-1 United East) rallied back to tie St. Mary's at 5-5 in the top of the 6th in game one, but the Seahawks (5-3, 1-1 United East) pushed the go-ahead run across the plate in the bottom of the sixth. In game two, Berks held a comfortable 10-3 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth. St. Mary's pulled within two runs and had the tying run at the plate when Kolbie Reeser got a ground out to third to seal the victory.

In game one, Berks got on the board first when Chad Evans delivered a sacrifice fly to score Colin Templin in the top of the first. The Seahawks went ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the second, but the Nittany Lions evened it at 2-all in the bottom of the third on an RBI by Nate Trovinger that scored Joe Gramignano. In the top of the sixth, Evans drove in Nick Bergeman and Gramignano with a double down the left field line. Evans later scored on a single by Reeser that tied the game at 5-5. A sacrifice fly by Ian Adams scored Brian Sanders to give the Seahawks the winning margin.

Ben Berkel allowed nine hits and six runs (five earned) while striking out four batters. Ryan Spatz tossed one scoreless inning of relief.

Gramignano, Templin, Trovinger, Reeser, and Bergeman all finished with two hits. Evans finished with a team-high three RBI and Gramignano scored a team-high two runs.

In game two, Templin scored on a wild pitch to put Berks up 1-0 in the top of the firth. The Nittany Lions tacked on five run in the sixth inning, with Templin driving in two runs and Logan Ewert, Bergeman, and Gramignano each adding an RBI in the inning. Tyler McGarvey scored on a Seahawks miscue on a sacrifice bunt by Jase Graybill in the seventh. Later that inning, Graybill scored on a wild pitch to give Berks an 8-1 advantage.

In the eighth, Templin scored on a wild pitch and Evans scored on an error to give Berks a 10-2 lead. The Seahawks got one run in the bottom of eighth and after four runs scored in the ninth, St. Mary's had a runner on second with two outs while trailing by two. Reeser, making his first pitching appearance, got a ground out to third base to pick up the save.

Alex Laudenslager earned the win after allowing eight hits and two runs, while striking out five in 6.2 innings to improve to 2-1 on the season. Dale Murphy struck out two batters in 2.0 innings of relief.

Trovinger went 3-for-6 with a stolen base, while Templin and McGarvey both had two hits and scored two runs. Gramignano, Ewert, and Bergeman all had a hit, a run scored, and an RBI.

The two teams will play the rubber match on Monday, March 21 at 12 p.m.
