Nittany Lions comeback falls short against Wells

READING, PA (September 19, 2015) - The Penn State Berks men's soccer team scored in the 80th minute, but were unable to find the equalizer over final 10 minutes in a 3-2 setback to Wells College in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) opener on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions (2-3-1, 0-1 NEAC) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on Omar Guzman's fifth goal of the season at the 1:51 mark of the opening half. T.J. Yurkovic sent a pass deep into Wells territory and Guzman took a few touches and then ripped a line drive through the right side of the goal. The lead held up until the 28th minute when Jack Pilgrim got the Express (3-4, 1-1 NEAC) on the board, with Wyatt Buerkle adding the first of his two assists.

Wells took a 2-1 lead after Justin Bingham scored 1:58 into the second stanza. Just under four minutes later Lim Duchesneau added an unassisted goal to build a 3-1 lead with 40 minutes to play.

Inside the box in the 80th minute, Isaiah Danner played the ball over to Jon Mercier, who then headed it over the keeper's head and into the far back corner to cut the score to 3-2. The Nittany Lions battled for the tying goal over the next 10 minutes, but could not find it. Joe Budnovitch ripped a shot from 20-yards out the smacked off the crossbar in the 85th minute. Later Dan Zhmurkin sent a header on target, but the keeper was able to make a leaping save and preserve the lead.

Rotman Saltos finished the game with five saves, while his counterpart Owen May had two stops.

Berks outshot the Express by a 12-10 margin, while Wells had a 7-4 advantage on corner kicks.

The Nittany Lions will host Keuka College in a NEAC tilt on Sunday, September 20 at 12 p.m.
