Budnovitch nets game winner in first overtime

READING, PA (October 16, 2015) - Omar Guzman tallied two goals and added the assist on Joe Budnovitch's game winner in a 3-2 overtime win over Bryn Athyn in Friday evening's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest.

The Nittany Lions improve to 6-7-1 overall and are 4-4 in the conference. The 12 points puts Berks tied with SUNY Polytechnic (4-2) and Cazenovia College (4-4) for the sixth and final playoff spot.

Bryn Athyn (7-1-1, 3-5-1 NEAC) tied the contest up with a pair of late second half goals to force the game into overtime. In the overtime period, Kyle Moran made a strong step to strip the ball from the Bryn Athyn attacker and he then made a pass ahead to Jon Mercier. Mercier sent a pass ahead to Guzman, who then travelled down the far sideline. Once he reached the end line he sent a perfect cross into the middle of the box that Budnovitch hit with his thigh into the back of the net just 1:49 into the extra frame. The goal was Budnovitch's fifth of the season and second gamewinner.

Guzman opened up the scoring in the first half when he was rewarded a penalty kick in the 39th minute. Guzman sent a low liner to the keepers right that was stopped with a diving save, but the rebound went right back to Guzman and he sent it through the wide open net.

Guzman's second goal was as beautfiul as they come as he swatted a pass from Mercier out of the air from the top of the right corner of the box over the keeper's head and into the back left post of the net. Guzman ranks second in the conference in goals scored (11) and points (26), while Mercier tops the NEAC in assists (seven).

Rotman Saltos made six saves to pick up his sixth win of the season, while Bryn Athyn keeper Damilare Adeleye finished with five stops.

Berks held the advantage on shots by a 16-11 margin, while Bryn Athyn had a 6-5 edge on corner kicks.

Dan Zhmurkin was all over the field up top for Berks and created several strong scoring oppurtunities thoughout the game. T.J. Yurkovic shot sail just wide of the open net with the game even at 2-all. Budnovitch also just missed out on an open net late in the second half.

The Nittany Lions will host Wilson College in a NEAC contest on Wednesday, October 21 at 5 p.m. In that contest, the Nittany Lions will be hosting a Pink Game fundraiser to support the Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks.
