Baseball season ends at regional tournament

MARIETTA, OH (May 16, 2014) - The Penn State Berks baseball team saw its 2014 draw to a close after dropping a 7-1 decision to La Roche College at the NCAA Mideast Regional on Friday afternoon at Don Schaly Stadium.

Troy Salerno provided the Nittany Lions (19-21) only run of the day after dropping a perfect bunt down the third base line for a hit and two errors on the play allowed him to come around to score. The third baseman field the bunt and throw sailed wide of first base, the second baseman then tried to throw Salerno out at third but his throw bounced passed the short stop covering the bag allowing Salerno to cruise into home.

Ryan Tantala, playing in the final game of his magnificent four-year career, went 1-for-4 to finish with 97 hits in his career. Tantala ranks among the top-10 in program history for batting average, hits, RBI, doubles, triples, home runs, slugging percentage, and on-base percentage. He also ranks among the top-10 in wins, innings pitched, ERA, games started, appearances, strikeouts, and complete games.

Connor Corson and Tom Grablewski picked up the other two hits for the Nittany Lions. Grablewski played on his finest defensive games of the season, making four putouts at third base.

Kyle Hartman pitched strong for the Nittany Lions, but La Roche was able to find holes and get timely hits. Hartman pitched six innings and struck out three batters. John Bonino came on for 3.0 innings of one-hit, scoreless relief.

With several key members of the lineup and pitching staff set to return, the Nittany Lions will look to return to the regional tournament next season and beyond.
