Baseball continues hot start to NEAC schedule

LANCASTER, PA (April 9, 2014) - The Penn State Berks baseball team picked up a 14-5 road win over Lancaster Bible College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Wednesday afternoon at Charger Field.

The Nittany Lions improved to 8-10 on the season and moved to 4-0 in the conference, while LBC fell to 7-12 on the season and 2-6 in the NEAC.

After two scoreless innings by both teams, the Nittany Lions broke through with two unearned runs in the top of the third. Troy Salerno and Luke Erb each singled and Salerno came around to score on an error by the third baseman on a grounder by Nick Zipay. Kyle Rissmiller then had an RBI ground out to score Erb from third.

The Chargers countered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the third, before the Nittany Lions added a comfortable lead with five runs in the top of the fourth. Zach Reis reached on an error to lead off the inning and came around to score from first on a single by Connor Corson that included an error by the right fielder. Salerno and Rissmiller each drove in a run in the inning, which included three errors and a wild pitch.

LBC was able to pull to within 9-4 in the bottom of the sixth, but that is as close as they would get.

Ryan Tantala picked up his first win of the season after pitching 5 1/3 innings. He scattered six hits and allowed four runs before giving way to reliever Mitch Renninger. Renninger earned the first save of his young collegiate career after pitching 3 2/3 innings of effective relief. He had one strike out, while allowing just one run.

Salerno finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored. Erb also scored three runs, while Reis crossed the plate two times. Zipay and Corson both tallied two hits.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Cazenovia College for a three-game series beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 12 at 1 p.m.
