Nittany Lions rally late to beat Washington in extras

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 12, 2014) - The Penn State Berks baseball team scored eight runs in the final four innings and capped off the comeback with the game winning walk off run in the bottom of the tenth inning to defeat Washington College (Md.) by a score of 10-9 on Wednesday evening at the Cal Ripken Experience.

The Nittany Lions (3-2) pulled off of the win by using some small and taking advantage of defensive miscues by Washington College. Keeanu Erb got hit by a pitch to lead off the tenth inning and Nick Zipay laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance him to second base. Tom Grablewski followed with a well placed sacrifice bunt that was thrown wide of first base and Erb came around to score, which sent the Nittany Lions and their loyal fans into frenzy.

Kyle Hartman tossed the final 2 2/3 innings to pick up the win. After the teams exchanged leads in the eighth and ninth innings, before Hartman held the Shoreman scoreless in the top of the 10th.

Connor Corson blasted a 2-1 fastball deep over the fence in centerfield to pull Berks within one run in the bottom of the eighth. Hartman reached on an error by the first baseman and Luke Erb followed with a bunt single. Alex Doyle advanced the runner with a ground out to the right side. Keeanu Erb then lined a single to right field to give the Nittany Lions their first lead of the game at 8-7.

The Shoreman scored two in the top of the ninth to take a 9-8 lead, but the Nittany Lions were resilient in their half of the inning. Corson, again got things started, by drawing a walk to begin the inning and moved up to second on a wild pitch. Hartman grounded out to advance Corson to third. With two outs on the board, Corson tied the game up by scoring on a passed ball.

Luke Erb and Keeanu Erb each went 3-for-4 at the plate. Keeanu Erb recorded three RBI and a run scored, while Luke Erb scored two runs and drove in one run. Corson, Hartman, and Zach Reis each scored two runs.

Mitch Renninger made his pitching debut with 5 1/3 innings of work. In Hartman's 2 2/3 innings pitched he allowed just one hit, while striking out four batters.

The game finished just before midnight after starting 45 minutes late, enduring a 40 minute rain delay, and seeing extra frames that included many pitching changes.
