Offensive outburst leads Nittany Lions to sweep

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 11, 2014) - After struggling at the plate in the season opener a day ago, the Penn State Berks bats came to life as they swept Albertus Magnus College by scores of 15-6 and 15-3 on the second day of the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach.

In the first game, the Nittany Lions put up some runs without putting the ball into play all that much. In the first inning, Berks scored a run after four batters drew walks. The second inning saw two walks, three hit batters, one wild pitch, and one base hit to build the lead to 5-0. They tacked on a few runs for a comfortable 10-1 lead heading into the fourth inning.

Albertus Magnus used two home runs to cut that deficit to 10-6 and seemed to have the momentum swinging in its favor. But the Nittany Lions took control of the contest with five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Ryan Tantala went 3-for-3 with four RBI to lead the offensive attack. Nick Zipay went 2-for- 4 with two RBI and three runs scored, and Troy Salerno was 2-for-2 with three runs scored. Luke Erb also scored three runs.

Alex Doyle pitched five strong innings to pick up the win in his first start on the mound this season. He allowed five runs - only two earned - while striking out two batters. Rockie Long allowed only one hit in two scoreless innings of relief. He made his collegiate debut by striking out the first batter he faced and ended his appearance by catching the last batter of the game looking.

In the second game, the Nittany Lions broke open a 4-2 game by scoring eight runs in the top of the fifth inning. Tom Grablewski and Zach Reis each collected three hits, three runs batted in, and two runs scored. Connor Corson recorded three hits, while Tantala had two hits and three RBI. Keeanu Erb and Zipay both picked up two hits and two runs scored, while Zipay also added two stolen bases.

The highlight of the game was Dylan Gallagher making his collegiate pitching debut. The freshman right-hander picked up the win with a complete-game effort. He allowed three runs on nine hits, while striking out seven batters.

The Nittany Lions will face Washington College on Wednesday, March 12 at 7 p.m.
