Baseball falls in season opener

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 10, 2014) - The Penn State Berks baseball team opened up its 2014 campaign with a tough 9-7 setback to New Paltz in the morning and dropped an 11-0 decision to Ohio Wesleyan in the afternoon at the Cal Ripken Experience.

In the opener, Nick Zipay led the Nittany Lions by going 2-for-5 with two RBI. Zipay recorded both of those RBI with a double to left field in the ninth inning that cut the deficit to three runs. Pinch hitter Joel Sharp, playing in his first baseball game in 15 years, singled on the first pitch he saw to make it a 9-7 game. With the tying run at the plate, New Paltz ended the threat with a strikeout.

Tom Grablewski had two hits and a run batted in, while Dylan Gallagher and Dillon Landrigan each had RBI singles.

Erik Lanzner pitched two innings of effective relief and Tylor Bair a perfect inning for Berks.

In the nightcap, Zach Reis doubled down the right field line. Elias Manzueta pitched 2.2 scoreless innings before the Nittany Lion defense broke down with several miscues. He finished the game with two strikeouts.

The Nittany Lions will face Albertus Magnus College in a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 11 beginning at 4 p.m.
