Nittany Lions pull away late for win over Cobleskill

LANCASTER, PA (February 28, 2014) - The Penn State Berks men's basketball team picked up a 66-57 victory over SUNY Cobleskill in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Quarterfinal round on Friday night at Lancaster Bible College.

The Nittany Lions (8-17) never trailed as Darren Major opened the game with a 3-pointer as Berks jumped out to a 12-2 lead over the first 3:15 of the first half. The Fighting Tigers scrapped back and cut their deficit to six points, but Christian Burggraf connected from long distance to build an 11 point cushion with 7:18 left in the half. Cobleskill used a 16-5 run down the stretch to make it 31-all heading into the intermission.

Burggraf and Dameon Nixon knocked down 3-pointers in the first two possessions of the second half to jump out to a six point lead. Much like the first half, the Fighting Tigers fought back to trail by one point with 10:19 left and then within two points with 3:16 left. The Nittany Lions used a 12-5 run over the final three plus minutes to earn their third straight trip to the NEAC Semifinal round. In that final stretch, Major was 2-of-2 from beyond the arc, while Burggraf and Major were each 2-for-2 at the foul line to ice the game.

Major was 4-of-8 from 3-point land to finish with a contest-high 22 points. The sophomore guard picked the most important time to establish a career-high in rebounds (8), steals (5), and assists (4).

Burggraf made three 3-pointers and finished the game 7-of-9 shooting from the field en route to a 19 point performance, while Nixon tallied 12 points and handed out nine assists. Tom Smith recorded 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field and 3-for-5 at the line. Joel Ellison had a putback in the first half to tally the only two points not scored by the four starters.

Cortrell King came off the bench to add 14 points and six rebounds for Cobleskill. Alexis Nunez chipped in 12 points and Mike Chapman added 10 points.

Berks shot 13-for-17 (76.5%) from the free throw line and connected on nine 3-pointers, while the Fighting Tigers were 9-for-14 (64.3%) at the line and were only 4-of-17 from long distance.

The Nittany Lions will face host and No. 1 seed Lancaster Bible College on Saturday, March 1 at 2 p.m. with a trip to the NEAC title game on the line.
