Men's basketball ousted by Lancaster Bible in semis

LANCASTER, PA (March 1, 2014) - The Penn State Berks men's basketball team saw its season come to a close after suffering an 89-60 setback to Lancaster Bible College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Semifinal round on Saturday afternoon at Horst Athletic Center.

The Chargers (19-7) raced out to an early 15-6 lead and were ahead by as many as 14 points in the first half. Darren Major hit a jumper with 1:17 left in the half and the Nittany Lions got a defensive rebound on the next possession. It appeared that the deficit was going to get down to single-digits, but a 3-pointer rimmed out. Lancaster Bible then added a layup to take a 47-34 lead into the break. Lancaster Bible made nine of its first 10 shots in the second half to take total control of the game.

Major led the team in scoring with 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the floor. The sophomore guard holds the single-season record for points with 492, while his 18.9 scoring average is the second highest in program-history. Major pulled down a career-high nine rebounds, which also was a game-high.

Tom Smith finished off his stellar four-year career with 15 points and five rebounds. The senior center will go down as one of the best players to put on a Penn State Berks uniform. He is the career leader at Berks in points (1337), field goal made (533), free throws made (256), and rebounds (707). He ranks second in scoring average (13.4), games played (100), games started (82), and minutes (2577).

Joey Lewis chipped in a career-high 10 points, while Christian Burggraf added seven points and seven rebounds.

The Chargers had four players reach double-figures, led by CJ Dunston with 20. Dunston shot 9-of-10 from the floor, while also grabbing six rebounds and three assists. Naheer Mirza drained four 3-pointers and finished with 12 points and eight assists. Jordan Mellinger had 12 points, while Dondre Perry added 10.

This is the third straight season that the Nittany Lions were knocked out in the NEAC Semifinal round. With the win, Lancaster Bible will go to the NEAC Championship for the first time in program history.
