Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Smith with a Senior Day to remember

READING, PA (February 15, 2014) - Tom Smith was honored prior to the game with Senior Day festivities and again with 13:32 remaining in the second half as he became the all-time points leader in Penn State Berks history. Smith finished with a contest-high 25 points helping lead the men's basketball team to an 85-69 victory over Keuka College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Saturday afternoon.

Smith, who entered the game needing 19 points to surpass Adam Fusco for the scoring title, tallied 14 points in the first half and quickly added two baskets in the second half. He then scored his 1,285 point after Dameon Nixon broke a full court press and fed the ball to Smith cutting toward the basket. Head coach Scott Yarnell instantly called time-out as the crowd, well aware of the history taking place, went wild and teammates mobbed the senior center.

He currently sits at 1,291 points over his impressive four-year career. He has two regular season games to add to the total and if the team continues their high level of play, a playoff run.

The Nittany Lions (7-15, 7-9 NEAC) are currently tied with Wells College for sixth place and 1.5 games behind SUNY Cobleskill for the fifth and final playoff spot.

Smith shot 12-of-14 from the floor for a shooting percentage of .857, which trails his 10-for-10 (1.000) performance at Lancaster Bible on February 18, 2012 for the single-game high.

Lost in the craziness was Darren Major's 20 points that gave him the single-season scoring title. He currently has 410 points, just edging Joe Askew's 409 in the 2006-07 season.

Christian Burggraf followed up his 31 point performance from last night with 17 against the Storm. He was 5-of-6 from the field, while making all three of his 3-pointers and converting all four from the foul line. Nixon added eight points and eight assists.

Berks trailed 2-0, 4-3, and 6-5 before taking the lead for good with 16:46 left in the first half. They closed at the first half on an 11-4 run to take a 17 point cushion into the intermission. The Storm managed to cut the deficit to 12 points, but that is as close as they would get.

Tyler Hixson led Keuka with 20 points, while Adam Starks added 10 points and a contest-high seven rebounds. Casey Williams came off the bench to chip in 11 points.

The Nittany Lions will continue their playoff push with a NEAC contest at SUNY Cobleskill on Friday, February 21 at 5 p.m.
