Men’s basketball downed by SUNYIT



READING, PA (January 31, 2014) – The Penn State Berks men's basketball staged a late comeback bid, but it was not enough as SUNY Institute of Technology picked up a 109-93 win in Friday's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest at Beaver Community Center.

The Nittany Lions trailed 59-45 at halftime and were down by as many as 19 points with 15:45 remaining in the game. Berks whittled away at the deficit were pulled the game to 91-83 with just over six minutes to play. The Wildcats gained control of the game with 12 unanswered points and went up by 20.

Darren Major went off for a career-high 27 points on 10-of-19 shooting from the floor. The sophomore guard made two 3-pointers and went 5-for-7 at the free throw line. Tom Smith picked up a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds. He also had four assists and two steals. Christian Burggraf made a career-high five three points en route to scoring 18 points. Nygel Belizaire added nine points, while Joey Lewis had seven points and seven assists.

The Wildcats had six players score in double-figures, led by Ryan James with 23. Sallo Fofana chipped in 22 points, while Malcolm Jones had 22. Alexander Drake and Alonzo Grainger each had 15 points, followed by Maverick Hodge with 10 points and 10 assists.

The Nittany Lions will host SUNY Cobleskill on Saturday, February 1 at 1 p.m.
