Women's tennis captures NEAC regular season title

Box Score ABINGTON, PA (April 20, 2013) - The Penn State Berks women's tennis team downed Penn State Abington, 6-3, to finish off a perfect run through the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) and the regular season title on Saturday afternoon. (Boxscore)

This is the first time that Nittany Lions have won the regular-season crown since 2006-07 season, when the went 7-0. The 2012-13 squad finished off the conference slate with a 6-0 record and improved to 10-3 overall.

Crystal Hitz and Elizabeth Kehm need a 7-3 win in the tiebreak of the No. 1 doubles match to earn a 9-8 victory over Jenny Abraham and Alexandria Murianka. Samantha Warga and Allison Monkman cruised to an 8-1 victory at No. 2 doubles, while Kristina Hatter and Taylor Keselica came up just short of giving Berks a doubles sweep. The No. 3 duo lost 8-1 in the tiebreak to fall 8-7 to Olya Popili and Carly Powell.

Kehm was tied 2-2 at No. 2 singles before winning by default and building the Nittany Lions lead to 3-1. Hitz won her first set 7-6 (7-5) and followed it with a 6-3 second set victory. Monkman assured Berks the win with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph at No. 4 singles. Hatter tacked on another point for Berks with comeback 4-6, 7-5, 9-11 win at No. 5 singles.

The Nittany Lions will compete in the NEAC Team Tournament on Saturday, April 27 at Birchwood Tennis Club in Clarks Summit, Pa.
