Men's basketball downed by DeSales

CENTER VALLEY, PA (December 11, 2013) – The Penn State Berks men's basketball team suffered an 81-64 setback to projected MAC Freedom Conference champion DeSales University in a non-conference tilt on Wednesday afternoon at Billera Hall.

The Nittany Lions allowed a 9-0 run to open up the game, but were able to trail by as little as six points with 4:30 left until the halftime intermission. The Bulldogs scored the first 14 points of the second half, before Berks went on a 14-3 run to get back into the game.

Darren Major collected two quick fouls in the first half and sat out the final 13-plus minutes without a point scored. He then came out strong in the second half and finished with a contest-high 17 points on 7-of-16 shooting from the floor. The sophomore guard entered the contest with a team-best 16.3 points per game average.

Joel Ellison turned in the best performance of his season with 13 points and eight rebounds. Christian Burggraf knocked down three 3-pointers and finished with 11 points, while Dameon Nixon added 10 points and four assists. Jaleel Williams came off the bench for eight points and four boards.

The Bulldogs, coming off a 10-point win over 12th ranked St. Mary's College (Md.) on Monday, shot 11-of-26 from beyond the arc to take control of the game. Andrew Kohler had a team-high 16 points and was one of four Bulldogs to pull down six rebounds. Kyle Hash added 14 points, followed by Cody Deal with 13.

The deciding factor of the game was the Bulldog's success on the glass, where they held a 51-35 advantage. The shooting from long range also greatly favored DeSales with a 42.3% (11-26) compared to the Nittany Lions 19.0% (4-21).

The Nittany Lions will return to action on Wednesday, January 8 when they host Delaware Valley College in a non-conference contest at 7 p.m. in Beaver Community Center.
