Smith reaches 1,000th career point against Alvernia

READING, PA (November 30, 2013) - Tom Smith hit a jumper 31 seconds into the second half to become just the second player in program-history to score 1,000 points in their career during the Penn State Berks men's basketball teams 95-83 loss to Alvernia University on Saturday afternoon at Beaver Community Center. Smith entered the game with 999 points and it was expected that the career milestone would take place very quickly in the contest. However, Smith was sent to the bench after committing two fouls in the opening 2 minutes, six seconds and would not return until after the break.

Christian Burggraf dished a pass to Smith down low, who then spun past his defender and laid a shot off the glass to give him point number 1,001 of his career in the opening moments of the second half.

Head coach Scott Yarnell instantly called time out as the crowd went crazy celebrating Smith's prestigious accomplishment. Smith had a fan club of family, friends and former teammates Connor Hough, Dontez Reid, and Jeff Schmidt (current member of the coaching staff) rooting him on.

Smith joins Adam Fusco (2006-10) as the only Nittany Lions to reach 1,000 career points. Fusco has a career mark of 1,284 points, which Smith is in reach of with 20 games left on the regular season schedule.

The Nittany Lions battled hard throughout the day against local foe Alvernia, trailing only 41-36 at halftime and by only seven points with 7:15 remaining in the game. Smith cut the Crusaders lead to 46-44 with 16:39 in the game, but that is the closest the Nittany Lions would get.

Darren Major went off for a season-high 21 points to lead the Nittany Lions. The sophomore guard missed his first three foul shots, but recovered by making all 12 of his ensuing shots at the line. The 12 free throws made is a single-game record. In addition, Major recorded six rebounds and a career-high four blocked shots.

Dameon Nixon had 17 points, seven assists, five rebounds, and three steals. Burggraf finished the game with 16 points and five boards. Shavoy Murray connected on 2-of-3 shots from long range and recorded a season-high eight points. Jaleel Williams finished with a team-high 10 rebounds.

Chris Davis tallied 21 points and seven assists to lead the Crusader offense. Kahlil Bennett hit four 3-pointers and also chipped 21 points. Brian Parker added 13 points and a contest-high 12 rebounds.

The Nittany Lions will host Morrisville State College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Friday, December 6 at 6 p.m. in Beaver Community Center.
