Women's tennis beat Immaculata in season opener

Box Score IMMACULATA, PA (September 19, 2012) - The Penn State Berks women's tennis team opened up the 2012-13 season with a convincing 7-2 victory over Immaculata University on Wednesday afternoon. (Boxscore)

The Nittany Lions grabbed two of the three wins in doubles to take control of the match early on. The No. 1 duo of Crystal Hitz and Arion Harris pulled out an 8-6 victory over Emily Degnan and Theresa Martini. Allison Monkman and Taylor Keselica were victorious at third doubles, winning by a score of 8-4.

Hitz, now in her junior season, picked up right where she left last April when she earned NEAC Player of the Year honors. She made quick work at first singles with a 6-2, 6-0 win. Harris won 6-1, 6-1 in No. 2 singles, while Samantha Warga was a 6-2, 6-3 winner in the third flight.

Kristina Hatter pulled out a three-set thriller in the tightest match of the contest against Kara Trowbridge in the No. 4 spot. Hatter took the first set 6-3, before falling by the same score in the second. In the decisive third set tiebreaker, Hatter earned the win by a score of 10-8.

Liz Martinez earned a split on the day with her 6-4, 6-2 win at fifth singles. In doubles action, Martinez and GLORIA KIM dropped a hard fought battle at the No. 2 flight by a score of 8-5. RUTH FORTUNA (No. 6 singles) also gave a strong effort, but was on the wrong side of 6-2, 7-5 decision.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Alvernia University on Friday, September 21 for a 4 p.m. contest.
