Baseball drops a pair of nailbiters to DeSales

READING, PA (April 7, 2012) - The Penn State Berks baseball team lost by scores of 6-3 and 1-0 in a pair of non-conference contests with DeSales University on Saturday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lions looked to continue their strong play from Friday afternoon when they swept a pair of NEAC games with Penn State Harrisburg. After trailing 2-0 in the opener, Berks took the lead off of three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Connor Corson led off the inning with a double down the left field line before the Bulldogs retired the next two hitters. Kevin Heilman, who finished 3-for-4, singled and Corson scored on a throwing error by the shortstop. Michael Ference tallied an RBI double and scored on a single by Christian Marcin to center field.

The Bulldogs evened the contest at 3-all with a run in the fourth and went ahead for good with a three-spot in the top of the fifth.

David Loose pitched 2.1 innings of relief, scattering four hits and not allowing any runs. He struck out one batter and did not issue any walks.

The second contest featured a pitchers duel that consisted of a combined nine strikeouts, eight hits and one run between the two teams. Unfortunately for Berks, that one run belonged to the Bulldogs.

In the third inning, Nick Fischer reached on an error to lead off and advanced to second on a single by Drew Borger. Fischer scored from second on a wild pitch on what proved to be the winning run.

Ryan Tantala gave up two hits in 3.0 innings with one strikeout. Dusten Rutt surrendered two hits in 2.0 innings of work, while Kyle Hartman and Ference each threw a scoreless inning.

Hartman went 2-for-3 at the plate and Rich Schlamowitz was 1-for-3.
