Baseball sweeps NEAC opener at Harrisburg

MIDDLETOWN, PA (April 6, 2012) – The Penn State Berks baseball team worked out of its offensive funk with four home runs and exploded for 22 runs in a doubleheader sweep over Penn State Harrisburg in the NEAC opener on Friday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions (5-14, 2-0 NEAC West) played one of its best all-around games to pick up a 12-0 win in the opener. Berks fended off a late Harrisburg (7-20, 1-4 NEAC West) rally for a 10-8 victory in the nightcap.

In the first game, Matt Emrick tossed a complete-game, two-hitter to earn his first win of the season. He struck out three batters and issued just one walk. The Nittany Lions have received complete-game performances from their pitchers in four of the teams wins this season.

The offense supplied more than enough run support for Emrick as they scored a season-high 12 runs. Connor Corson, Rich Schlamowitz and Kevin Heilman each homered. Christian Marcin finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored, while Kyle Hartman went 2-for-4 with three RBI.

Corson put Berks on the board in the top of the first with his first home run of the season and second of his career. Heilman led off the fourth inning with his shot and the Nittany Lions tacked on two more runs in the inning to build a 6-0 lead. Schlamowitz's two-run blast capped a six-run in the top of the sixth inning.

In the second game, Nick Vitelli joined in on the home run parade with a shot to lead off the fourth. Corson, Schlamowitz, Ryan Tantala and Dillon Landrigan each recorded three hits. Tantala and Schlamowitz each recorded two RBI.

Heilman picked up his second win of the season after going 6.0 innings. He allowed five runs – three earned – and struck out three batters and walked three batters. After Harrisburg plated a pair of runs in each of the first two innings, Heilman settled down and allowed just three base runners over the next three innings.

The Nittany Lions will host DeSales University on Saturday, April 7 beginning at 1 p.m.
