Nittany Lions stay hot with sweep of Abington

READING, PA (April 19, 2012) – Powered by strong pitching, solid defense and timely hitting, the Penn State Berks baseball team downed Penn State Abington 5-3 and 6-3 at Hintz Athletic Field on Thursday afternoon.

With the sweep, Berks furthered its lead to two-games over Abington atop the standings by improving to 8-0 in the conference.  Abington drops to 8-4 and is tied with Gallaudet University for second-place.

In the first game, Berks opened up the scoring with two runs in the second and two in the third to build a 4-0 cushion. Abington made the game interesting with three runs in the top of the fourth.

Kyle Hartman, who was recently named the NEAC Student-Athlete of the Week, allowed three earned runs over four innings to pick up the win and improve his record to 2-0. It was the first time this season that a team was able to score off of Hartman, who now sports a 2.45 ERA.

In the second inning, Rich Schlamowitz was hit by a pitch with one out. Schlamowitz and Kevin Heilman executed a perfect hit-and-run to set up first and third for the Nittany Lions. Michael Ference had an RBI single to score Schlamowitz and the leftfielder misplayed it to allow Heilman to score all the way from first.

An inning later, Aaron Wilkins doubled to lead off and scored on a single to left by Connor Corson. Schlamowitz and Heilman followed with back-to-back singles to drive in Corson.

Heilman added the final run when he doubled to lead off the sixth inning. As he advanced to third on a wild pitch, the catcher's throw to third sailed into left field and Heilman was able to walk home to put Berks ahead 5-3.

Bryer Eshbach earned his first career save after throwing three strong innings of relief. He ran into trouble in the top of the sixth after walking two batters, but Eshbach remained calm and got a strikeout to end the threat.

Abington had the tying run on first base in the seventh inning, but Eshbach forced a shallow fly behind shortstop that Nick Vitelli easily put away for the win.

Berks had the momentum on its side and its ace pitcher on the hill for the second game. The Nittany Lions went up 3-0 after the first inning and
Matt Emrick set down the first nine batters he faced. It was the third consecutive game the senior right-hander went the distance as he improved to 3-1 on the season. He allowed three hits and walked only one batter.

The only trouble Emrick ran into came in the top of the fourth when Abington evened the contest at 3-all. In that inning, Abington had two hits and took advantage of two Berks errors. From that point on, Emrick allowed just two base runners, one of which he picked off.

Corson tripled to right center to score Wilkins for the first run of the game. After a walk to Hartman, Schlamowitz singled through the right side to score Corson and Heilman followed with an RBI single.

Berks broke the 3-3 tie with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. Wilkins walked and Vitelli's sacrifice attempt turned into a bunt single. Corson then moved up both runners with a sacrifice bunt to the right side. Hartman scored Wilkins with a sacrifice fly to deep centerfield and Heilman then capped off his day with an RBI single up the middle.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Keuka College for a doubleheader on Friday, April 20 at 2 p.m. and return home for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Gallaudet University on Saturday, April 21. They will wrap up the regular-season with a make-up doubleheader against Cazenovia College on Monday, April 23 in Scranton, PA.
