Offensive outburst paces Nittany Lions to sweep over Keuka

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. (April 20, 2012) -  The Penn State Berks baseball team continued its perfect run through the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Western Division with a 19-11 and 10-4 doubleheader sweep over Keuka College on Friday afternoon at Kuhl Field.

The Nittany Lions won their eighth straight contest to improve to 13-18 overall and 10-0 in the conference. They are in the driver's seat to win the division, needing to win just one of their four remaining conference games.

The 19 runs scored in the opener was a season-best. The Nittany Lions took control of the game with a 10-run fourth inning. They scored two runs or more in four of their at-bats.

Sophomore right fielder Connor Corson led the offensive production with a 4-for-4 showing at the plate. He scored a career-high four runs. Ryan Zawaski smacked his first career home run and finished the game 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Nick Vitelli, who crushed his fourth homer of the season, went 3-for-5 with four RBI and three runs scored.

Kevin Heilman (3-1) pitched 5.0 strong innings, he allowed three runs after scattering seven hits and striking out three batters. The senior right-hander has not let up more than three earned runs in a game this season.

The Nittany Lions kept the bats going in the second game, pounding out 19 hits as six batters finished with two or more hits.

Seniors Rich Schlamowitz and Michael Ference each recorded a career-best four hits. Schlamowitz added an RBI and scored three times, while Ference drove in three runs and scored twice. Kyle Hartman, the reigning NEAC Player of the Week, went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Dillon Landrigan, Tyler Salvati and Corson all finished with two hits.

Aaron Stupp was the winning pitcher after going 6.0 innings and striking out four. He allowed four runs on nine hits. The senior righty has won three of his last four starts for the Nittany Lions.

During the Nittany Lions winning streak, they have outscored the opposition by a 72-29 margin and the starting pitchers have tossed five complete games. Catchers Zawaski and Landrigan have played a large part in the pitching success with their excellent play behind the dish.

The Nittany Lions will host second-place Gallaudet University in a conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 21 at Hintz Athletic Field. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
