Hartman’s heroics help Nittany Lions to sweep of SUNYIT

READING, PA (April 15, 2012) - Kyle Hartman did a little bit of everything to guide the Penn State Berks baseball team to a thrilling 3-2 win in eight innings of the opener against SUNYIT. The Nittany Lions finished off the sweep with a 7-2 victory in the second game of the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Western Division contest on Sunday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lions improved to 9-18 overall and 6-0 in the NEAC West. They hold a one game lead over Penn State Abington (6-2) for first place in the division. SUNYIT dropped to 7-19 overall and 6-4 in the conference, which is tied for Gallaudet University for third place. Berks won its season-best fourth straight game.

Hartman was nearly flawless in his 2.0 innings of work to finish off the game. He picked up the first win of his collegiate career, while recording six consecutive strikeouts. The strikeout total was a personal-best, surpassing his previous high of three. His only blemish was an infield single to the first batter he faced. The sophomore left-hander has not allowed a run in 7.0 innings this season.

Hartman helped his own cause with a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth. Aaron Wilkins led off the inning with a double down the leftfield line. After a failed sacrifice and a groundout to the third baseman, it appeared the SUNYIT pitcher Jeff Albright was going to work out of the jam. But Hartman, the Nittany Lions most lethal hitter, carried the momentum from his pitching with him to the plate.

He got an outside pitch and went with it to lace a single down the left field line to score Wilkins from second base with ease. The Nittany Lions bench rushed the field to mob Hartman and Wilkins in celebration.

Ryan Zawaski played a vital role in sending the game into extra innings. Trailing 2-1 with two outs in bottom of the seventh, Zawaski lined a single to leftfield to score Rich Schlamowitz with the tying run. Schlamowitz singled up the middle to start the inning and was moved up to second on a perfect sacrifice bunt by Michael Ference.

Zawaski got Berks on the scoreboard in the fourth with a doubled of the fence in leftfield to start the inning. He scored when the third baseman couldn't handle a sharp grounder by Nick Vitelli with two outs.

Kevin Heilman was superb on the mound for the Nittany Lions. He went 6.0 innings, scattering seven hits and allowing just two runs. The senior right-hander recorded a career-high eight strikeouts.

Heilman and Hartman combined to record a single-game school record 14 strikeouts.

In the second game, the Wildcats got to Ryan Tantala with two runs in the opening inning. From that point on Tantala was in complete control, allowing only five base runners the rest of the way. He struck out five batters and walked none to earn his second win and second complete-game of the season. The sophomore right-hander has lowered his ERA from 7.50 to 3.41 over his last four appearances.

The Nittany Lion offense went to work in the bottom of the second to give Tantala all the run support he would need. Heilman singled and Ference had to settle with a double after missing a home run by a matter of inches. Dillon Landrigan scored Heilman with a sacrifice fly and Wilkins drove in Ference with a single. After a pair of walks, Hartman doubled to left center to record two RBI.

In the fourth inning, Connor Corson ripped a stand-up triple to right center and scored on a single up the middle by Hartman. Hartman later scored on an error and Ference capped off the scoring with a double to right center.

Hartman finished the game 2-for-2 with three RBI, while Ference was 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI.

The Nittany Lions will host Haverford College in a single-game on Wednesday, April 18 at Hintz Athletic Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
