Nittany Lions improve to 4-0 in NEAC with sweep of Lancaster Bible

LANCASTER, PA (April 14, 2012) – A pair of complete-game pitching gems and an abundance of home runs propelled the Penn State Berks baseball team to a twinbill sweep of Lancaster Bible College on Saturday afternoon at Charger Field. Berks won 8-0 in the opener and busted out a 14-4 victory in the second game.

Matt Emrick threw his second straight complete-game shutout in game one and Aaron Stupp struck out a career-high eight batters to help the Nittany Lions (7-18, 4-0 NEAC West) earn the sweep.

Connor Corson homered in both games and finished the day 4-for-7 with four runs scored and four runs batted in. Kyle Hartman, who also recorded a round-tripper in each game, went 5-for-8 with three runs, three RBI and improved to .365 with his team-leading batting average. For the second time in his career, NICK VITELLI smacked two homers in a game, while Christian Marcin hit the first blast of his career.

Emrick (2-1) hasn't allowed any runs in four of his five appearances this season. He also hasn't given up more than four in four of five outings either. The senior right-hander has lowered his ERA from 7.71 to 2.57 over the last two games.

Emrick faced the minimum amount of batters through 5 2/3 innings despite a pair of singles by Lancaster Bible. After the Chargers (8-16, 2-6 NEAC West) started the game off with a single, Emrick picked the runner off of first to escape any damage. He proceeded to sit down the next 10 batters in order before a one-out single in the fifth. Again the runner was immediately erased from the base paths, this time by a 6-4-3 inning-ending double play.

Berks wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as Aaron Wilkins walked, advanced to second on a passed ball and moved to third on a ground out. Corson then brought Wilkins home with a double. In the third inning, NICK VITELLI walked, Corson singled and Hartman then smacked a homer to right for a 4-0 lead.

Kevin Heilman hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Corson in the fourth. Corson capped off the scoring with a solo shot and Heilman added another sacrifice fly to score Hartman.

Stupp, who recorded his first career complete-game in a win over Mount Aloysius earlier this season, allowed four runs – three earned – on five hits. The eight strikeouts he recorded shattered his previous high of three, which came against DeSales University last Saturday.

The Chargers were able to get at Stupp early, plating four runs in the first three innings. But Stupp settled in after that and allowed only one base runner to reach third base the rest of the way.

Berks took advantage of two walks and error to explode for six runs in the second inning. Hartman led off the inning with his team-leading fourth homer of the season. Wilkins hit a two-out single that scored Rich Schlamowitz and Heilman. Vitelli followed with the first of his two homers, this one a three-run shot to left.

Michael Ference recorded an RBI in the third inning that put the Nittany Lions ahead 7-2. The Chargers cut the lead to 7-4, before Vitelli and Corson accounted for three runs with back-to-back homers in the sixth.

Marcin, who entered the game with only one extra base hit, capped off the scoring with a three-run shot in the top of the seventh.

The Nittany Lions will host SUNYIT in an NEAC Western Division doubleheader on Sunday, April 15 at Hintz Athletic Field. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
