Baseball drops a pair of nail biters on final day of Ripken Experience

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 8, 2012) – As has been the case all season, the Penn State Berks baseball team received a superb effort from its pitchers, but the offense has not been able to find the timely hitting needed to pick up the win.

On the final day of their trip down south, the Nittany Lions (0-7) fell 5-2 in 12 innings to Averett University and then 5-3 to Eastern University.

In the opener with the Cougars (13-7), Bryer Eshbach shined in his career-high 7.0 innings of work. The righty scattered seven hits, while striking out three batters and walking just one. After surrendering one run in the first and third innings, Eshbach settled in nicely and allowed just three base runners over the next four innings.

Freshman Steve Koenig turned in another solid pitching effort after being called on in relief. He set the Cougars down in order in three of his five innings of work. Averett finally got to Koenig in the 12th inning, when they were able to break the tie with three runs.

Connor Corson went 2-for-5 with a double, one run scored and drove in a run, while Matt Emrick collected two hits and scored a run. Senior Michael Ference evened the contest at two-all with an RBI double in the fourth inning.

Berks loaded the bases with two outs in the 10th inning, but the Cougars worked out of the jam. For the game, the Nittany Lions stranded 11 runners, including five in scoring position.

In the nightcap, senior Ken Mack gave up five runs over 6.0 innings, allowing just two runs. The right-hander worked out of trouble by inducing inning ending double plays in the bottom of second and third.

Nick Vitelli, Kevin Heilman and Kyle Hartman each recorded two hits and scored a run to lead the Nittany Lions.

Vitelli led off the top of the seventh with a single, advanced to second on a balk and came around to score on an RBI single to right by Heilman. Heilman advanced to third after a pair of wild pitches and Hartman drove him in with a single to give Berks a 3-2 lead.

The Eagles (6-2) answered right back in the bottom half of the inning with a three spot to take the lead for good.

Freshman Dusten Rutt pitched the eighth inning and forced a 4-6-3 double play to register the third twin killing of the game.

The Nittany Lions return to action with their home opener against Muhlenberg College on Wednesday, March 14 at 4 p.m.
